DonaldTrump paid his respects to America’s Second World War dead at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii yesterday on his way across the Pacific to begin a tour of Asia overshadowed by the spectre of a fresh conflict.

The US president made no public mention of North Korea as he visited the memorial commemorating the attack that had pulled America into the war. But Pyongyang’s rapidly accelerating weapons programme and Trump’s own escalating rhetoric loom inescapably over his 11-day trip to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

South Korea’s spy agency has warned that the North may be preparing to mark Trump’s presence with a fresh missile or nuclear test after unusual activity was spotted at one of its main weapons facilities in recent…
